Her passion for plastic surgery led her to pursue rigorous post-medical school training, ultimately earning her board certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Dowbak’s commitment to excellence was evident throughout her career, and she became a respected member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Association of Hand Surgeons.

A Pioneer in Transgender Care

One of Dr. Dowbak’s most significant achievements was her work in transgender care. Beginning her journey in this specialized field at the Johns Hopkins Gender Identity Clinic in 1971, she became a key figure in providing gender-affirming surgeries. Under the mentorship of Dr. Ira Pauley at the University of Oregon Medical Center, she gained invaluable knowledge and skills that would shape her career.

From 1981 onward, Dr. Dowbak operated on hundreds of transgender patients, helping them align their bodies with their gender identity. Her dedication to continuously improving her techniques led her to participate in numerous specialized courses, including the Operative Techniques in the Male to Female Patient, offered by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

As the former Vice President of the Central California Association of Plastic Surgeons, she played a key role in advancing the profession and advocating for patient-centered care.
