The Healing Process

Proper preparation is key for a safe and smooth tummy tuck procedure. Follow these steps to set yourself up for a successful surgery and recovery.

Medical Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Oliver Simmons or Dr. Jaime Flores  will discuss your goals, evaluate your abdominal region, and create a customized surgical plan. Be transparent about your medical history, including any previous abdominal surgeries, current medications, and conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. You may need to undergo blood tests and other diagnostics to confirm you’re healthy enough for surgery.

Medication Adjustments

Stop taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and certain supplements (e.g., fish oil, vitamin E) at least 10 days prior to surgery to reduce bleeding risks. Your surgeon will prescribe medications for pain management and infection prevention. Be sure to fill these before your surgery day.

Lifestyle Modifications

Smoking impairs wound healing and can increase the risk of complications. Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery. In the weeks leading up to surgery, focus on a balanced diet and stay hydrated to promote better healing

Prepare Your Recovery Area

Arrange pillows to keep your upper body elevated, as this position aids in reducing post-operative swelling. Have all supplies like gauze, loose clothing, and necessary medications ready. You will need help with daily tasks during the initial recovery phase, so make sure you have someone available for at least the first week.

Post Op

Post-Operative Recovery

Recovery from a tummy tuck requires patience and adherence to post-operative guidelines. Below are the different phases of recovery and what you can expect at each stage.

1. Immediately After Surgery

You’ll wake up with surgical dressings over your incision and small drainage tubes to remove excess fluid. These tubes are usually in place for 1-2 weeks. It’s normal to feel tightness and discomfort around the abdominal area. Pain will be managed with prescribed medications, which should be taken as directed. You may need to walk slightly bent over to avoid tension on your incision. Short walks are encouraged to promote circulation, but strenuous activities should be avoided.

2. First Week of Recovery

Dr. Simmons and Dr. Flores will provide specific instructions for cleaning your incision site and managing your drains. Keeping the area clean is essential to preventing infection. Swelling and bruising are expected in the abdominal area and can last for several weeks. Wearing a compression garment will help reduce swelling and support your healing muscles. At your first follow-up visit, typically within a week, your surgeon will check your incision, remove drains, and assess the healing process.

3. Weeks 2-4

After about 2 weeks, you may be cleared for light activities and gentle walks. However, avoid any strenuous activities, lifting, or core exercises until your surgeon gives you the green light. Continue wearing your compression garment as directed, typically for 4-6 weeks, to control swelling and support your abdomen as it heals. You may feel numbness or tingling around the incision area—this is normal and usually temporary.

4. Long-Term Recovery

Over time, your incision will flatten and fade into a thin scar, which is often easily concealed beneath undergarments. Follow any scar care instructions, such as applying silicone sheets or creams. Most patients can gradually return to more rigorous physical activities around 6-8 weeks, but always get clearance from your surgeon. Focus on rebuilding core strength slowly and safely. Final results may take 6-12 months to fully reveal as residual swelling subsides and your body adjusts to its new shape..

Risks and Precautions

While a tummy tuck is a generally safe procedure, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks and how to minimize them.

Common Side Effects

Expect moderate swelling and bruising around the abdomen, which may last for several weeks. Temporary numbness around the incision and belly button is common and usually resolves over time.

Possible Complications

Infection is a potential risk with any surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe antibiotics to minimize this risk. If you notice increased redness, drainage, or fever, contact your surgeon immediately. Fluid accumulation under the skin (seroma) is a common risk. This is why drains are used, and your surgeon will monitor for signs of fluid buildup after drain removal. Tummy tuck patients are at a higher risk for blood clots, especially if you remain immobile. Walking frequently and wearing compression garments can help reduce this risk. While scarring is inevitable, Dr. Simmons and Dr. Flores will make every effort to place your incision in a discreet location, typically below the bikini line.

Post-Operative Precautions

Avoid any lifting, pulling, or pushing for at least 6 weeks to allow your incision to heal properly. Smoking impairs healing, while alcohol can interfere with medications. Both should be avoided for several weeks post-op. While walking is encouraged, avoid any activities that could strain your abdominal muscles. Use support when standing and sitting down to prevent stress on the incision.

Results: What to Expect

A tummy tuck can significantly enhance the appearance of your abdomen, giving you a firmer, flatter stomach. While patience is necessary, the results are long-lasting if you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Initial Changes

You will see an immediate improvement in the contour of your abdomen once swelling starts to subside, typically within 2-3 weeks. As swelling reduces, your skin will continue to tighten and adjust to the newly sculpted abdominal area.

Long-Term Results

Final results are typically visible around 6-12 months, once the swelling has fully resolved, and the tissue has healed. Your new abdominal shape will be more defined, with excess skin and fat removed. Staying active and maintaining a stable weight will help you preserve the results of your tummy tuck for years to come.
