Proper preparation is key for a safe and smooth tummy tuck procedure. Follow these steps to set yourself up for a successful surgery and recovery.
During your consultation, Dr. Oliver Simmons or Dr. Jaime Flores will discuss your goals, evaluate your abdominal region, and create a customized surgical plan. Be transparent about your medical history, including any previous abdominal surgeries, current medications, and conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. You may need to undergo blood tests and other diagnostics to confirm you’re healthy enough for surgery.
Stop taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and certain supplements (e.g., fish oil, vitamin E) at least 10 days prior to surgery to reduce bleeding risks. Your surgeon will prescribe medications for pain management and infection prevention. Be sure to fill these before your surgery day.
Smoking impairs wound healing and can increase the risk of complications. Stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after surgery. In the weeks leading up to surgery, focus on a balanced diet and stay hydrated to promote better healing
Arrange pillows to keep your upper body elevated, as this position aids in reducing post-operative swelling. Have all supplies like gauze, loose clothing, and necessary medications ready. You will need help with daily tasks during the initial recovery phase, so make sure you have someone available for at least the first week.
Recovery from a tummy tuck requires patience and adherence to post-operative guidelines. Below are the different phases of recovery and what you can expect at each stage.
You’ll wake up with surgical dressings over your incision and small drainage tubes to remove excess fluid. These tubes are usually in place for 1-2 weeks. It’s normal to feel tightness and discomfort around the abdominal area. Pain will be managed with prescribed medications, which should be taken as directed. You may need to walk slightly bent over to avoid tension on your incision. Short walks are encouraged to promote circulation, but strenuous activities should be avoided.
Dr. Simmons and Dr. Flores will provide specific instructions for cleaning your incision site and managing your drains. Keeping the area clean is essential to preventing infection. Swelling and bruising are expected in the abdominal area and can last for several weeks. Wearing a compression garment will help reduce swelling and support your healing muscles. At your first follow-up visit, typically within a week, your surgeon will check your incision, remove drains, and assess the healing process.
